Regain

That dreaded word Regain.  No matter what you call it Regain, Stalled, Plateau it sends feelings of dread and failure through your system.  It doesn’t have to be that way.  Regain, Stalled or Plateau is not an indication of failure it is simply an indication that you require a level of assistance or intervention to address what is really happening here.

You are not alone.  Over 60% of Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery recipients will experience regain at some stage of their journey.  I have had clients at 3 months post surgery!! experience it.  It can be devastating.  It is heartbreaking because I know it can all be avoided.

Regain is caused by a number of different factors including but not limited to:

  • Poor food Choice
  • Grazing
  • Night Eating
  • Excessive Portion Size
  • Alcohol intake
  • Medication
  • Inadequate Protein intake
  • Mixing fluids and food
  • No Plan or Preparation
  • Inactivity
  • Lack of support
  • Emotional/Psychological issues
  • Poor Nutrition

As you go through the different stages of your Bariatric journey you will be able to resume eating “normal” food and as time progresses those old eating habits slip in ever so quietly and before you know it clothes are getting a bit tighter, the scales are edging up and so begins the old emotional roller coaster that was your past journey of Weight Loss.

The worst thing you can do at this stage is accept the regain and give up on yourself.  Guilt, shame and embarrassment all come in to play as well.  You do not need to suffer this.  This is the time you need to reach out for help and get back on track.  I tell my clients to look at it as if it were a Hiccup. We will acknowledge it, deal with it, learn from it and push that Restart Button.

Regain is a perfect example of why it is so critical to Change your Mind to Change your Body.  Our Brains are so powerful and yet we never really use them to our advantage.  With Brain retraining we can change our brains neural pathways, reorganise our thought’s to create new habits and behaviours that ensure future success.

Getting Back on Track

Don’t let a Regain/Stalled period stop you from achieving your goal of a slimmer body.  Here is what you need to do to take back control and hit that ReSet button.

  • Seek Professional Help - Shame, guilt and embarrassment are often the reason we don't seek help when we need it. Push through it
  • Replace 1 or 2 meals with a Protein Drink to kickstart your ReSet Programme.
  • Plan & Prepare all meals to avoid impulse buying of inappropriate food that then makes you feel even worse about yourself.
  • Look at Why & When you started slipping back to that old thinking. What was the trigger, what happened? Write it down, get it out of your head and refocus.
